- How much storage capacity do you need? This is important because memory cards come in lots of different sizes; the bigger the storage capacity the more photos you will be able to store on it. If you were to buy an 8Gb memory card then you would be able to take about 2,200 photos of high resolution and store them on the card.
However it is never really a good idea to store too many photos on one memory card and if you have a lot of room, then this is probably something that you will be tempted to do. You will lose a lot of photos if you store them on a memory card that later becomes corrupted.
- You may find that you can pick up some very cheap memory cards from less well known manufacturers. The problem is that a lot of these cards are not very well made and will become corrupted in a short-time period. It is probable that every memory card will eventually become corrupted at some stage, the lifespan of these ones is usually no longer than a few months. Losing photos can be devastating so it is probably best to pay a bit more for the higher quality cards.
- Another thing you will want to consider is the speed of the memory card. Some memory cards can be a bit slow and this makes them more likely to become corrupted – especially if you turn off the camera while it is still updating the memory card.
