Unlike other kinds of photography, event photography calls for greater attention particularly if the size of the event is excessively big for only one photographer to handle. Parallel events within one major event in fact inevitably take two or more photographers to make sure everything is covered. As a client, you can rest your mind over the quality of pictures you are to anticipate if the photographer assures you of shots around these five fundamental angles:
Special moments. Event photography need not only be a chronological documentation of activities taking place within an event. More fundamental than that are peculiar and tender moments which show the over-all feeling event participants and guests felt while being at the event. When they see the pictures, they will recollect how they felt as though they were in the moment again. Seize laughter, tears, triumphs and excitement.
People. This is not hard for event-goers to admit: they go to events for vanity reasons. And so, society pages of local dailies are peppered with poses here and there of who-and-who rubbing shoulders with the bigwigs of company so-and-so. Just next to emotions in import, in event photography, pictures of prominent people going to the event are part of the bundle. In case of a corporate event, it may help with branding or corporate image. In case of a private event, the photographs of people who attended the event serve as a memento to be cherished for generations.
Chronology. This is already given in event photography. Basically, the photographer takes photos of things as they occur, and ensure that everything is covered from start to end. This is simply a digest of all the activities as given in the program. And for this to be addressed better, the photographer can brush up the program before the event and plans on doing the takes for the chronological order of activities. In case the programme has names of event guests and , it would also be good to already put faces to the names ahead of time so when there is an opportunity to take a shot particularly of the really spectacular guests, then the photographer can do so. Remember, the social occasion can be so worked up and so a photographer who knows how to pull off his time and work his way around gets the best and most complete coverage.
Highlights. Every event has a prominent gimmick, usually as an introductory salvo or just before presenting the merchandise, in the case of product launches. Part of event photography is of course taking photos of the event highlight or gimmick. The photographer can play around with his inventive take on the gimmick or highlight of the event to accentuate on his pictures that this, indeed, is a special part of the presentation.
Changes In The Event. No matter how event organisers attempt to make everything work as planned, some things can go beyond their control. And so event photography should perpetually have a sensitivity to turn of events that may make the event more interesting than how it currently is. Make sure to take shots of everything, and it is simple to get rid of those photographs which the client does not want to include in the final portfolio.
